Mathematics & Science

Open Source Software in the content areas is plentiful, but it is especially well developed in mathematics and science. Mathematicians and scientists have been creating their own tools and sharing them with others since the earliest days of computing. A large percentage of the Open Source Developer Community comes from these academic fields. These are a few of the most useful tools for educators.

OpenOffice.org Math
Another component of the OpenOffice.org suite, Math allows you to create complex equations using almost any mathematics symbols. These equations can then be easily imported into any OpenOffice.org application or even other applications.

The R Project Statistics Package
R is an environment and language for performing statistical analysis. It includes a wide variety of statistical tools such as linear and nonlinear modeling, classical statistics tests, time-series analysis, classification, and clustering. It is not an application for statistics novices, but it can be a powerful tool for more advanced high school courses in mathematics, the natural sciences, and the social sciences.

Celestia
Celestia is space simulation software that allows you and your students to explore the universe in three dimensions. Unlike traditional planetarium software, Celestia does not constrain you to observing the sky from Earth. It has a simple point-and-go interface that allows you to fly to any object in Celestia's massive sky map.

Stellarium
Used in actual planetariums to control special projectors, Stellarium brings a massive database of astronomical sights to your computer screen. It allows you to view the sky from any point on Earth and see a realistic 3D representation of what you would actually see with the naked eye, binoculars, or a telescope.
