Operating Systems

The Open Source and Free Software Movement truly took off as a result of the GNU/Linux operating system. Through the vision of pioneers like Richard Stallman and Linus Torvalds, a powerful Unix-like operating system came into being. It runs on numerous hardware platforms and is scalable from an outdated desktop computer to the servers that run sites like Google.

If you think that all of that sounds intimidating, you are not alone. Most educators believe that they do not have the time or energy to delve into the world of Linux or other Open Source Operating Systems. Fortunately, Linux is no longer the arcane lifestyle that it once was. There are normal people, including educators, that are using Linux today.

Linux can serve educators. If you want to explore a wealth of free Open Source software that goes beyond what is available on Windows or OS X, Linux can help. If you are afraid of viruses, spyware, and other malicious code, Linux can protect you. If you have older hardware and Microsoft Windows or Apple OS X runs too slowly on it, Linux may be the answer to your problem.

When your school is purchasing computers for laboratories or servers, choosing Linux rather than commercial operating systems can save thousands upon thousands of dollars.
