Web Applications

Web Applications allow any user on any networked computer to instantly access software. Unlike desktop applications that require you to install software on each computer that will use it, web applications only have to be installed on one computer (a web server). These applications cannot replicate the complexity of desktop applications yet, but the ease of distribution and collaborative nature of web applications make them especially attractive for educators. They will also run on any hardware or operating system that has a web browser. They work well with older machines. Since these programs reside on a single server, they are also generally less labor-intensive to support and troubleshoot.

Your students can experience a uniform experience in web applications regardless of the type of computer they use. They can also access the applications from any Internet-connected computer at home or in the school. If you do not have consistent access to the same computer lab or share computers with others, web applications are ideal for your classroom.

Unlike desktop applications, web applications do generally require some computer expertise to install. If you have a web server at your school and the IT staff to support it, they should be able to install these applications for you. If you do not have your own web server, there are numerous commercial sites that are willing to install these applications and host them for a fee.
