Audio

Along with video editing, audio editing and creation has become a centerpiece of teacher and student multimedia creation. Open Source audio applications allow you to move beyond the basic built-in and trial audio products that come with your hardware. With these applications your students can utilize the same production tools as professionals. These applications are also particularly useful for creating targeted content for presentations rather than relying on traditional media like CDs and audiotapes.

Audacity
Audacity is a powerful audio recording and editing application. It allows you to convert traditional media into digital audio, edit a wide variety of digital audio formats, and apply complex digital effects to your audio. It provides a visual representation of the audio that you are editing and allows you to make precision edits by zooming in on small time frames.

Streamripper
Have you ever heard something on an Internet radio stream that you wanted to share with your students, but you had no way to capture it before it was taken down or moved? Or are you presenting in a location where you do not have reliable high-speed network access? Streamripper allows you to capture streams to your hard drive and edit them for later use. It is compatible with numerous formats, but it is most notably missing support for Windows Media and RealAudio streams. Until these proprietary formats embrace open standards, they will remain inaccessible. Nonetheless, you will find plenty of quality content that is compatible with Streamripper.

Songbird
As you build your own collection of multimedia files at school, you need a tool to help you organize. Songbird is a robust audio management and jukebox player that supports more audio formats than Apple's iTunes. You and your students may find it an attractive alternative for organizing your audio and finding audio content on the Internet.
