Linux Terminal Server

Do you have a computer lab full of slow and outdated machines? Has a donor given you computers that simply are not up to running current software? Do you need a way to centrally administer classroom computers? Would you like for each of your students to have a unique place to store their files that follows them to any computer that they use? Linux Terminal Server may be the answer to your problems. Rather than running desktop applications and an operating system on each student's computer, Linux terminal server runs everything on a single powerful server. This server then sends out screen data and receives input from any number of "dumb" terminals that your students are using over the network. Although their computers may be horribly outdated, if you have a powerful server, they will experience the speed of a much faster computer. By spending just a few thousand dollars on a server, you can save yourself from having to buy tens of thousands of dollars worth of computers.

K12LTSP
Based on Red Hat's Fedora Linux Server, the K12 Linux Terminal Server Project provides a turnkey solution for schools. It has extensive documentation and a strong support community of teachers and school IT professionals. While installation will require some IT background, it is far easier than configuring most Linux servers. If you have Windows applications that you must run, K12LTSP also allows for connecting to Windows servers or running virtualized Windows sessions (although this may require you to buy a Windows license).
