Desktop Linux

Although it was once associated with cryptic command lines, Linux has now developed into an easy to use desktop operating system. Today's Linux distributions feature robust graphical user interfaces (GUI) like Microsoft Windows and Apple Macintosh OS X. It is capable of all of the multimedia functions that educators need. Linux comes in many different versions that are tailored to needs of different users. All Linux distributions can run the same software. If you want to try Linux without leaving your other operating system behind, most Linux distributions allow you to preview Linux by booting from a CD or dual-booting both Linux and your other operating system. Hardware support in Linux is plentiful, but you may wish to test your devices with Linux before you commit to it. Although Linux is easy to use, when you must reconfigure it to do more complex tasks such as using unsupported hardware it can become very difficult. Nonetheless, it is an exciting, stable, safe, and fast operating system that is worth trying.

Ubuntu
Ubuntu is currently the most popular distribution of desktop Linux. Proclaiming itself "Linux for Human Beings," Ubuntu is one of the more approachable distributions for Windows and OS X users. It also comes in varieties specifically tailored for education (Edubuntu) and older computers (Xubuntu). Because of the growing community of Ubuntu users, support for novices is often more accessible than other distributions.

Fedora
Based on the widely used commercial Red Hat Linux, Fedora is the community version of Red Hat Linux that is used as a test platform for new features. Since it uses the same packages as Red Hat Linux, Fedora has a large installed base of precompiled software.

Debian
Debian Linux is the basis for Ubuntu and Linux purists often prefer it. It shares the same package management software as Ubuntu and there are a wealth of precompiled software packages for it.

PuppyLinux
Aside from its cute name, PuppyLinux is designed specifically to run well on older, slower computers. It is extremely small and streamlined, but it is able to run any Linux applications. If you have old machines running unsupported operating systems (such as Windows 98), PuppyLinux can make your older machine come back to life.
