Server Linux

If you are interested in running a web server, hosting web applications, or storing files on a central server, Linux can be the most effective choice for a server operating system. Server Linux can also serve as a firewall for your network or as a print server. All of the desktop Linux distributions can be used as servers. They can run on almost any hardware from an old PC to the latest and greatest dedicated server hardware.

Running Linux as a server operating system is ultimately no more complicated than running any other server operating system, but it is not a task for a technology novice. If you have some experience with desktop Linux, however, you could set up a small server without much trouble. If you intend for the server to be utilized by a wider base of users, you may need to get help from an IT professional.
